About Mandelbulb Ecosystem

Mandelbulb Ecosystem renders the Mandelbulb -- the three-dimensional cousin of the Mandelbrot set -- as a colossal, cathedral-like fractal structure that the camera orbits and explores. The fractal's power parameter and viewing angle are modulated by audio, causing the structure to morph between bulbous, organic forms and sharp, crystalline spires. Every surface is infinitely detailed, and zooming in reveals ever-smaller copies of the overall structure. The Mandelbulb is rendered with cinematic lighting: a key light that shifts color with spectral centroid, fill light from the environment, and volumetric god rays that pierce through gaps in the fractal geometry. The resulting imagery looks like the interior of an alien cathedral or the surface of a living planet -- vast, intricate, and otherworldly. Audio energy controls the camera distance and orbit speed, pulling in close during quiet moments to reveal fine detail and pulling back during loud passages to reveal the grand scale. Mandelbulb Ecosystem is the most computationally demanding effect in the library, but also the most visually spectacular. The combination of infinite fractal detail, cinematic lighting, and audio-reactive morphing produces frames of staggering beauty that rival offline-rendered CGI. It is the flagship effect for showcasing what real-time GPU computing can achieve in the browser.

How it works

The Mandelbulb is rendered using ray marching with the standard triplex algebra escape-time formula: (r,theta, phi)^n + c, where n (the power) is the primary audio-reactive parameter, modulated by bass energy between 6 and 10. The ray marcher uses distance estimation for efficient stepping and normal computation. Lighting uses a three-point setup with shadow rays for the key light. Ambient occlusion is approximated using the ray march step count. Volumetric god rays use a screen-space radial blur from the light source position. The camera orbit is computed using spherical coordinates with radius mapped to inverse RMS energy and angular velocity mapped to beat timing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How GPU-intensive is this effect?+
Mandelbulb Ecosystem is the most demanding effect in the library. It targets 60fps on a 2019 MacBook Pro at 720p. At higher resolutions, you may need a discrete GPU. A resolution scaling option is available.
Can I change the fractal power?+
The base fractal power is configurable from 2 to 12. Lower powers produce smoother, bulbous shapes; higher powers create spikier, more crystalline forms. Audio energy modulates around your chosen base value.
Can I explore the Mandelbulb freely?+
The camera follows a pre-computed orbit path by default. Free exploration mode is available in preview, but the deterministic export pipeline requires a fixed camera path for reproducible output.
