About Fluid Wave

Fluid Wave simulates audio-reactive fluid dynamics, transforming your music into swirling, turbulent liquid that flows across the screen with physically accurate behavior. Bass frequencies inject energy into the fluid, creating powerful vortices and currents, while higher frequencies add fine turbulence and color diffusion. The result is a mesmerizing display of color and motion that feels genuinely organic. The fluid simulation runs in real time on the GPU, computing velocity fields, pressure, and advection at each frame. Audio energy is injected as forces at positions mapped to frequency bands, creating a direct link between what you hear and where the fluid moves. Color dyes are added along with the forces, producing rich, painterly mixing patterns as different audio elements blend and interact. Fluid Wave produces visuals that look like abstract oil paintings in motion. The organic, unpredictable nature of fluid dynamics means that even repetitive musical patterns produce constantly evolving visual results. It is one of the most visually rich effects in the library, and a showcase for what modern GPU computing can achieve in a web browser.

How it works

The effect implements a 2D Navier-Stokes fluid solver on the GPU using a multi-pass ping-pong framebuffer technique. Each simulation step consists of: (1) force application from audio data, (2) advection of velocity field, (3) pressure solve via Jacobi iteration, (4) pressure gradient subtraction for divergence-free flow, and (5) dye advection and diffusion. The simulation runs at a fixed timestep independent of render framerate. Audio energy is injected as velocity impulses at frequency-mapped positions, and colored dye is added simultaneously.

Frequently Asked Questions

How GPU-intensive is the fluid simulation?+
Fluid Wave is one of the more demanding effects, but it runs at 60fps on a 2019 MacBook Pro. The simulation resolution is configurable -- lower resolutions run faster while still looking great.
Can I control the fluid viscosity?+
Yes. Viscosity controls how quickly the fluid loses energy. Low viscosity produces turbulent, chaotic flow; high viscosity creates smooth, painterly motion.
Does the fluid interact with any obstacles?+
The simulation supports configurable boundary conditions. You can add circular obstacles or walls that the fluid flows around, creating additional visual complexity.
