About Abyssal Fluid

Abyssal Fluid simulates the deep ocean as an audio-reactive fluid environment: dark, pressurized waters lit only by bioluminescent organisms and deep-sea volcanic vents. The fluid dynamics create slow, powerful currents that carry luminous particles through the abyss, with bass frequencies driving the deep ocean currents and higher frequencies triggering bioluminescent flashes from microscopic organisms. The visual palette is deliberately dark and moody. Deep blues, blacks, and occasional flashes of cyan and magenta create a world that feels pressurized and mysterious. Hydrothermal vent plumes rise from the bottom of the screen, their intensity and temperature-color driven by audio energy. Schools of bioluminescent particles drift through the currents, their collective glow pulsing with the rhythm like a deep-sea heartbeat. Abyssal Fluid creates an atmosphere of profound depth and mystery. The combination of darkness, pressure, and occasional flashes of light mirrors the dynamic of music that operates in the low registers -- doom metal, dark ambient, deep dubstep. The ocean metaphor adds emotional weight: the viewer is immersed in something vast, ancient, and powerful.

How it works

The base fluid simulation uses a 2D Navier-Stokes solver with high viscosity settings for slow, heavy fluid motion. Force injection is concentrated at the bottom of the screen (vent positions) with magnitude driven by bass energy. Bioluminescent particles are a secondary system: small instanced points that follow the fluid velocity field with added Brownian motion. Their emission intensity is triggered by onset detection with a fast attack and slow decay for flash-then-fade behavior. Vent plumes use a separate upward-biased particle system with temperature-mapped coloring (red at source, transitioning to dark as they cool). A blue-shifted color grading pass and a vignette create the deep-ocean atmosphere.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the scene always dark?+
Yes, darkness is core to the deep-ocean aesthetic. However, the bioluminescence and vent glow provide dynamic lighting that reveals the fluid motion. Brightness increases with audio energy, so loud passages are more illuminated.
Can I add deep-sea creatures?+
The bioluminescent particles already suggest microscopic organisms. Adding larger creature models is not currently supported, but the particle density and flash patterns can be configured to suggest different organism types.
How does this differ from Fluid Wave?+
Fluid Wave is bright, colorful, and uses fast-moving fluid. Abyssal Fluid is dark, atmospheric, and uses slow, viscous fluid with bioluminescent lighting. The two effects share a physics engine but produce completely different visual experiences.
