About Aurora Flow

Aurora Flow recreates the ethereal beauty of the aurora borealis as an audio-reactive particle curtain that shimmers and undulates across the sky. Thousands of translucent particles are arranged in flowing curtain formations, their colors shifting through greens, purples, and pinks as the music evolves. The curtains sway gently during quiet passages and billow dramatically during crescendos. The effect captures the magical quality of real auroras -- the way light seems to breathe and ripple through the atmosphere, creating patterns that are at once random and deeply structured. Audio energy drives the curtain motion at multiple scales: bass controls the broad swaying, mids drive the rippling, and highs add fine shimmer to individual particles. Aurora Flow creates an atmosphere of wonder and tranquility that elevates any listening experience. It is especially powerful with ambient, new age, and post-rock music where the gradual evolution of sound matches the slow, majestic motion of the aurora curtains.

How it works

Particles are arranged along vertical curtain strips using a noise-based displacement field. The noise field is seeded deterministically and its parameters are modulated by audio features: bass energy drives large-scale displacement amplitude, mid energy controls the noise frequency (ripple density), and high energy adds a secondary high-frequency noise layer for shimmer. Color is computed per-particle using a physically-inspired model where altitude maps to hue (green at low, purple at high), with intensity modulated by local audio energy. The curtains are rendered as alpha-blended point sprites with soft edges.

Science Behind This Effect

Aurora Flow's color palette is derived from the Scriabin-inspired key-color mapping — the dominant color shifts based on the detected musical key.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I change the aurora colors?+
Yes. While the default palette mimics real auroras (green, purple, pink), you can customize the color gradient to any palette. Popular alternatives include warm sunset tones and cool blue-white themes.
Is there a star background?+
Yes. Aurora Flow includes a subtle starfield background that adds depth to the scene. The star density and brightness are configurable, or you can disable them entirely.
How does this handle fast-paced music?+
Aurora Flow adapts its motion speed to the music energy. With fast-paced tracks, the curtains ripple and shimmer more intensely, but the overall flowing character is maintained for visual coherence.
