About Nebula Flow

Nebula Flow renders a volumetric particle nebula -- a vast, luminous cloud of gas and dust -- that evolves and sculpts itself in response to your music. The nebula is not a flat image or a simple particle system; it is a true three-dimensional volume with internal structure, density variations, and complex lighting. The camera moves through and around the nebula, revealing its depth and form as audio features drive its evolution. Bass frequencies control the nebula's overall density and expansion rate, causing it to contract into dense knots during heavy passages and expand into wispy filaments during light ones. Mid frequencies drive the internal turbulence, creating the characteristic swirling, billowing motion of interstellar gas clouds. High frequencies modulate the embedded star particles that punctuate the gas with points of bright light. The color palette shifts with harmonic content, transitioning between emission nebula reds, reflection nebula blues, and planetary nebula greens. Nebula Flow is the most visually immersive effect in the library. The volumetric rendering creates a sense of being inside a cosmic environment rather than watching a flat screen. Combined with the slow, majestic motion of nebula gas driven by musical energy, it produces an experience that is meditative, awe-inspiring, and deeply satisfying. It is the visualization you put on when you want to lose yourself in the music.

How it works

The nebula volume is defined by a 3D noise field (layered Simplex noise with audio-reactive octave parameters) sampled using ray marching. Each ray step accumulates density and color from the noise field, with density modulated by bass energy and noise frequency by mid energy. Embedded stars are instanced point sprites positioned within the volume, with brightness driven by high-frequency audio energy. Lighting uses a simplified scattering model where light from the stars and a global directional light is attenuated by accumulated density along the ray. The color lookup maps noise value to a nebula palette that shifts with spectral centroid. The camera follows a slow orbit path with a speed controlled by overall RMS energy. Performance is maintained by adaptive step count based on accumulated opacity (early ray termination).

Science Behind This Effect

Nebula Flow's gas cloud coloring uses the key-to-color mapping from synesthesia research, creating nebulae tinted by the song's detected musical key.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the volumetric rendering achieved?+
Nebula Flow uses ray marching through a 3D noise field to create true volumetric rendering. Each pixel traces a ray through the volume, accumulating density and color for physically plausible gas cloud appearance.
Can I control the nebula colors?+
Yes. Color presets include emission nebula (red/pink), reflection nebula (blue/white), planetary nebula (green/teal), and custom palettes. The spectral centroid of your audio also shifts the palette dynamically.
Is this GPU-intensive?+
Nebula Flow uses adaptive ray marching with early termination to maintain 60fps on a 2019 MacBook Pro. Denser nebula settings require more ray steps; you can adjust the quality-performance tradeoff in settings.
