About Waveform Ribbon

Waveform Ribbon transforms your audio into a graceful, three-dimensional ribbon that undulates through space like silk in the wind. The ribbon's shape is driven by the audio waveform while its width, color, and curvature respond to energy, spectral content, and beat events. The result is a visualization that feels both elegant and alive. Unlike flat waveform displays, the ribbon exists in full 3D space with subtle camera movement that reveals its depth and dimensionality. Light plays across its surface, creating highlights and shadows that accentuate the audio-driven motion. During quiet passages the ribbon flows gently; during intense sections it whips and curls with dramatic force. The effect strikes a perfect balance between abstract art and direct audio representation. You can clearly see the music in the ribbon's motion, yet it never feels clinical or technical. It is pure audiovisual poetry.

How it works

The ribbon is constructed as a triangle strip mesh where each vertex position is determined by the audio waveform amplitude at that point. The strip is extruded along a curved path in 3D space, with width modulated by spectral energy and twist angle driven by spectral centroid. A custom vertex shader handles the deformation in real time while the fragment shader applies gradient coloring and Fresnel-based edge highlighting. The camera orbits gently to reveal the 3D structure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I control the camera movement?+
The default camera gently orbits the ribbon. You can adjust the orbit speed, radius, and vertical angle in the effect settings, or lock the camera to a fixed position.
Does the ribbon support custom color gradients?+
Yes. You can define a multi-stop color gradient that maps along the ribbon's length, or enable spectral coloring where the hue is driven by the dominant frequency at each point.
How does the 3D depth work on a 2D screen?+
The ribbon uses perspective projection, lighting, and subtle shadow effects to convey depth. The slow camera orbit continuously reveals the three-dimensional structure, making the spatial form easy to perceive.
