About Particle Swarm Ecosystem

Particle Swarm Ecosystem simulates collective intelligence using thousands of particles that flock, swarm, and self-organize according to rules modulated by your audio. The particles follow boid-style flocking algorithms with audio-reactive parameters: bass controls cohesion (how tightly the swarm clusters), mids drive alignment (how much particles match their neighbors' velocity), and highs modulate separation (how much they avoid crowding). The emergent formations are stunning -- spiraling vortices, flowing rivers, pulsing clouds -- all arising from simple rules applied to individual particles. The swarm exhibits genuine emergent behavior. During quiet passages, particles form orderly, flowing formations like schools of fish or flocks of birds. When the energy increases, the swarm fragments into chaotic sub-groups that chase and merge. At peak energy, the entire swarm can explode into chaos before spontaneously reorganizing on the next downbeat. These transitions are entirely emergent -- they arise naturally from the audio-modulated flocking rules. Particle Swarm Ecosystem is mesmerizing because it taps into our innate fascination with collective behavior in nature. The particles feel alive, purposeful, and intelligent, even though each one follows simple rules. Watching the swarm respond to music creates a sense that the music itself is the organizing intelligence behind the collective.

How it works

Each particle maintains position, velocity, and acceleration. Each frame, three steering forces are computed: cohesion (steer toward local center of mass), alignment (match local average velocity), and separation (avoid crowding). The weights of these three forces are mapped to bass, mid, and high frequency energy respectively. An additional global attractor force pulls particles toward the screen center with strength inversely proportional to RMS energy (loud = freedom, quiet = cohesion). Spatial hashing accelerates neighbor queries for O(n) performance. All particles are rendered as a single instanced point mesh with velocity-aligned sprites for directional motion cues.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many particles are in the swarm?+
The default is 5,000 particles, configurable from 500 to 10,000. The spatial hashing optimization ensures smooth 60fps performance even at maximum particle count.
Can the particles form specific shapes?+
While the particles use emergent flocking behavior (not pre-defined shapes), you can add attractor points that guide the swarm toward general formations. The organic, self-organizing nature is the core appeal.
Does the swarm behavior change with different genres?+
Absolutely. The spectral balance of different genres naturally produces different flocking behaviors. Ambient music creates flowing, orderly flocks. EDM produces chaotic, explosive swarms. Jazz creates unpredictable, improvisational movement.
