About Particle Field

Particle Field fills the screen with thousands of audio-reactive particles that swarm, scatter, and coalesce in response to your music. Each particle is an independent agent whose velocity, color, and size are modulated by different audio features -- bass drives outward explosions, mids control swirling motion, and highs trigger color shifts. The emergent behavior creates organic, ever-changing formations that feel alive. During quiet passages, particles drift lazily in gentle currents. When the beat drops, they explode outward in a burst of kinetic energy before being pulled back into formation. Sustained notes create flowing streams while staccato rhythms produce flickering, firefly-like behavior. No two moments ever look the same, yet the deterministic engine ensures reproducible results. Particle Field is one of the most versatile effects in the library. Its abstract nature pairs well with virtually any genre, and the high configurability lets you dial in looks ranging from subtle ambient dust to aggressive particle explosions.

How it works

Particles are managed through an object pool of up to 10,000 instances, created once during initialization and reused throughout playback. Each frame, a compute-style update pass reads the current audio analysis data and applies forces to each particle: bass energy drives radial force, mid energy drives tangential (swirl) force, and high energy modulates damping. Particle positions, velocities, and colors are packed into a single instanced mesh for rendering in one draw call. The seeded RNG ensures identical initial conditions across plays.

Science Behind This Effect

Particle density and velocity are driven by the song's emotional arc trajectory, creating macro-level visual intensity that follows the music's dramatic shape.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will this slow down my computer?+
Particle Field is GPU-optimized using instanced rendering. All 10,000 particles are drawn in a single draw call, so it runs smoothly at 60fps even on modest hardware like a 2019 MacBook Pro.
Can I adjust the number of particles?+
Yes. The particle count is configurable from 1,000 to 10,000. Lower counts run faster on older hardware while higher counts create denser, more detailed fields.
How does the particle color work?+
Particles can use a fixed color, a palette that cycles over time, or spectral mapping where each particle's color reflects the frequency band it responds to most strongly.
