About Infinite Cyber Matrix

Infinite Cyber Matrix reimagines the iconic falling character rain as an audio-reactive digital environment. Columns of glowing characters cascade down the screen at speeds driven by different frequency bands -- bass columns fall slowly with heavy impact, mid columns stream at moderate pace, and treble columns flicker rapidly. The character brightness, color, and fall speed all respond to the music, creating a living digital waterfall. Beyond the classic 2D rain, the effect adds depth by rendering multiple layers of character columns at different distances, creating a parallax field of digital rain that extends into apparent infinity. Beat hits cause momentary flashes where entire columns brighten simultaneously, creating horizontal wave patterns through the vertical rain. During drops, the rain accelerates dramatically; during breakdowns, characters slow to a crawl and fade to near-invisible whispers. Infinite Cyber Matrix transforms the familiar matrix rain aesthetic into something dynamic and musical. The connection between falling digital characters and sound creates a synesthetic experience -- you can see the rhythm in the rain patterns, the melody in the brightness variations, and the energy in the fall speed. It is a visualization that feels both retro and futuristic.

How it works

Character columns are rendered as instanced quad meshes with a character sprite sheet texture. Each column maintains an independent scroll position, speed (mapped to a frequency band), and brightness (mapped to the corresponding band energy). Characters cycle through the sprite sheet at a rate tied to onset detection. The multi-layer parallax uses three depth planes with different scale and opacity, rendered back-to-front with additive blending. Beat-synchronized brightness pulses propagate horizontally across columns using a wave function with configurable speed. All column states are initialized with seeded RNG for deterministic output.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use custom characters?+
The default character set uses katakana-inspired glyphs. Alternative character sets include Latin, binary (0s and 1s), hexadecimal, and emoji. Custom character sets can be loaded from a sprite sheet.
Is this just a green screen effect?+
While the classic green is the default, the color is fully configurable. Popular alternatives include cyan (TRON-style), amber (terminal-style), and rainbow (where each column gets a different spectral color).
How does the depth parallax work?+
Three layers of character rain are rendered at different virtual distances. Farther layers have smaller, dimmer, slower characters, creating a convincing depth effect without actual 3D rendering.
