What you get

Key & scale

Major or minor, with the exact pitch class (C, F#, Bb, etc.)

Confidence score

How strongly the audio matches the detected key profile (0-100%)

Key probability distribution

Most tools give you one answer. MusicMind gives you Am 72%, C major 24% — showing all candidate keys ranked by likelihood.

Mode & scale type

Beyond major/minor — detects Dorian, Mixolydian, Phrygian, and 50+ scale types with modal emotion labels.

Ambiguity detection

Flags tracks where two or more keys compete, showing exactly how ambiguous the tonality is.

Palmer color mapping

Each key mapped to a Scriabin-inspired color for visual reference

Camelot notation

DJ-friendly notation for harmonic mixing (full report)

Modal emotion

Each mode carries an emotional character — Dorian feels bittersweet, Lydian feels dreamy. MusicMind labels these automatically.

All 24 keys, color-mapped

Scriabin-inspired color system, modernized for digital displays. Major keys use full saturation; minor keys are desaturated and darkened.

How it works

MusicMind computes a chromagram — a representation of how much energy exists in each of the 12 pitch classes over time. This chromagram is then correlated against Krumhansl-Kessler key profiles, empirically derived templates that represent the "expected" pitch distribution for each key.

The key with the highest correlation becomes the detected key. The confidence score reflects how strongly the audio matches that profile versus the runner-up.

Most tools give you one answer. MusicMind gives you Am 72%, C major 24% — a full key probability distribution across all 24 keys. This reveals tonal ambiguity that a single-answer detector hides, and lets you make informed creative decisions when the tonality is genuinely uncertain.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is MusicMind key detection?+
MusicMind uses Krumhansl-Kessler chromagram correlation, achieving high accuracy on studio recordings. Tracks with key changes are analyzed section-by-section.
Does it detect key changes within a song?+
Yes. The full MusicMind Report analyzes key across sections, identifying modulations and secondary keys with timestamps.
What about modes like Dorian or Mixolydian?+
MusicMind detects major and minor keys. Modal nuances (Dorian, Phrygian, etc.) are flagged when the chromagram profile diverges significantly from standard major/minor templates.
Can I get Camelot notation for DJ mixing?+
The full report includes Camelot wheel notation alongside standard key names, making it easy to plan harmonic mixes.
What is key ambiguity?+
Key ambiguity occurs when a track's pitch content fits multiple keys nearly equally well. For example, a song might be 60% A minor and 35% C major — the relative major. MusicMind shows the full probability distribution so you can see exactly how ambiguous the tonality is, rather than forcing a single answer.
Does it detect modes?+
Yes. Beyond major and minor, MusicMind identifies Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, and Locrian modes. Each detected mode includes a modal emotion label — for example, Dorian is tagged as "bittersweet" and Lydian as "dreamy."
What scales can it identify?+
MusicMind recognizes 50+ scale types including major, natural/harmonic/melodic minor, pentatonic (major and minor), blues, whole tone, diminished (half-whole and whole-half), chromatic, and church modes. The key probability distribution shows which scales best fit the audio.
