About Terrain Lines

Terrain Lines renders your music as a scrolling wireframe landscape where the terrain height is driven by audio frequency data. The effect creates a retro-futuristic mountain range that rises and falls with the music, scrolling toward the camera in an endless journey through sonic topography. Bass frequencies shape the broad mountain peaks while high frequencies add fine detail and texture to the ridges. The wireframe aesthetic gives Terrain Lines a distinctive look that references early computer graphics, Tron-era sci-fi, and synthwave album art. Glowing grid lines stretch into the distance with perspective foreshortening, creating a powerful sense of depth and forward motion. The horizon line pulses with overall energy, and the sky behind the terrain can be configured with gradient colors or starfield backgrounds. Terrain Lines is a fan favorite for synthwave, retrowave, and vaporwave content. The retro-digital aesthetic is instantly recognizable and endlessly shareable, making it a go-to choice for YouTube visualizer channels and social media music posts.

How it works

A grid mesh is generated once during initialization with configurable row and column counts. Each frame, vertex heights are set by reading frequency data from the pre-computed analysis, with each row offset by one time step to create the scrolling effect. The grid uses line-segment rendering with additive blending for the glowing wireframe look. A custom vertex shader handles the perspective transformation and height displacement, while the fragment shader applies distance-based fog and color grading.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I change the terrain colors?+
Yes. You can set the grid line color, the fog/horizon color, and an optional background gradient. Popular presets include neon pink/cyan for synthwave and purple/orange for vaporwave.
How far does the terrain scroll?+
The terrain scrolls infinitely by recycling grid rows. When a row passes the camera it is moved to the back and assigned new height values from the next audio frame.
Can I adjust the scroll speed?+
Yes. Scroll speed can be fixed or beat-synced. In beat-synced mode, the terrain advances by exactly one row per beat, creating a satisfying rhythmic movement.
