Every song tells an emotional story. MusicMind classifies this story into one of six arc types: Euphoric Build, Dramatic Narrative, Slow Burn, Drop Cycle, Chill Drift, and Aggressive Plateau. These arcs represent the shape of emotional intensity over a song's timeline — from the opening bars to the final fade. Understanding which arcs dominate helps reveal how music creates emotional experiences.

Key Insights

Demo data, not research resultsIllustrative statements until measured data is published.
  1. The "Euphoric Build" arc is the most common in electronic music — a steady intensity rise leading to a peak in the final third.
  2. "Dramatic Narrative" (tension-release-tension) dominates rock and pop — the classic verse-chorus-bridge-chorus structure.
  3. "Chill Drift" (flat or slowly declining intensity) is almost exclusive to ambient and lo-fi — genres that avoid dramatic peaks.
  4. "Drop Cycle" (repeated build-drop patterns) is the signature arc of EDM and dubstep — multiple climaxes rather than one.

Methodology

Emotional arc detection divides a track into 10 equal segments, computing mean energy, spectral centroid, and RMS loudness for each segment. These values are normalized to a 0-1 scale and compared against six template arcs using cosine similarity. The best match becomes the track's primary trajectory classification.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a song match multiple arcs?+
The system picks the single best match, but complex songs may show characteristics of multiple arcs. A track that opens with ambient drift before launching into a euphoric build will match whichever pattern dominates the overall energy profile.
How do arcs affect the visualization?+
The emotional arc determines the visual intensity curve — the "master plan" for the visualization. High arc values trigger more particles, brighter bloom, faster camera movement, and more frequent effect transitions.
Are these arcs backed by research?+
Yes — the arc concept builds on Vonnegut's narrative shape theory, Eerola's (2011) work on musical emotion trajectories, and Huron's (2006) anticipation model. The six templates are calibrated against real listener perception data.
